'SELF-TUTOR BOOK OF ZO-ENGLISH-HINDI' RELEASED IN NEW DELHI

New Delhi, March 14, 2010: An eminent professor of Jawaharlal Nehru University, P. K. S Pandey released yesterday the “Self-tutor Book of Zo-English-Hindi’ at the Sunday Worship Service of MELC Delhi here in Munirka. This is the first book among the Zous in India having an International Standard Book Number (ISBN).

The book was released by Prof. Pandey, Centre for Linguistic (School of Language, Literature & Culture Studies), JNU, New Delhi in the presence of government officers, scholars, students, church leaders and various community leaders.

In his speech, Prof. P.K.S Pandey said: “It’s a very special privilege for me to associate my self to release this precious book. Philip’s book is a pioneer in the field of Zo languages. We don’t find big officers writing languages and culture. Most of these books are written by the academicians only, but it is also rare. I am deeply inspired by his works. JNU is proud to have Philip as research student. I hope he will inspire the educated youths and others.”

MELCD Pastor T. Lalpu blessed the author and his book.

The author, Philip Thanglienmang explained how the book came into being. “The traditional shawls, Puanlaisan (wear by men) and Puandum (wear by women) is a symbolic representation of Zou,” the author said. ” It took eight years to complete the book”.

The books written by scholars are costly. However, the author admitted his book is priced at nominal rate (Rs. 200/-) so that many people can easily buy it.

Mr. Tongmin Misao, chairman, Kuki Worship Service, spoke on behalf of KWS, said: “We really appreciate Pu Phillip’s work. We wish him, and his family, God’s blessing.”

Mr. Mung, chairman, Tedim Chin Development Society, said: “Though he might be busy in his office, yet, he could write book. Philip set a good example for us.”

Mr. Ngamlen, vice-president, Kuki Students’ Organisation, said: “Many people will benefit from Pu Phillip’s book. His work is also a kind of service to God.”

Mr. Kammuanmung, research scholar, JNU, said: “Hindi is a big problem for many of us. The book will help us a lot. After reading this book, I hope I would able to argue anyone in Hindi.”

Mr. Muanneu, M.Com, a Sunday School Teacher in ZCF Delhi, says, “I appreciate Pu Phillip for bringing out such a finest book ever among the Zous”.

Mr. Suanliankhup Baite, a veteran student leader, said: “I came to Delhi in 1999. In my early days, life was so horrible without learning Hindi. Now this book will add more ideas. I wish the author to come out with more pictures/photographs in the next books.”

Mr. Thangzalun Khuptong, a prominent leader, wonders, “How did Bro Philip manage his time?”

Mr. Joyful Tonsing, president, Siamsinpawlpi (SSPP), says: “Among the Zomis, we have such keen researcher in language is a pride for us. We appreciate his works and wish him the best in the days to come.”

In 2006, Philip Tanglienmang authored the following books:

(5) Katholic Zailate leh Mass Lamzuuina

Now another two books of the same author is in press. It is likely to publish this year.

Though the releasing function was organised in simple manner, however, the turn out was quite impressive. The function ended successfully. Praise the Lord!

About the Worship Service

The releasing function is a special item of the Sunday worship service in MELC Delhi. The service was chaired by its Local Secretary. Nu Mengnu, Imphal, who came to Delhi few weeks back, opened the day with her soulful prayer after reading the scriptures from Amos 5:4… It was followed by mass prayer. Mass prayer items include – i) Delhi Zomi Crusade (16-17 March), ii) Zougaal Day (March 17), iii) For the Japanese brethrens hit by the earthquake and Tsunami in Japan, iv) Miss Mary Manhoihching (d/o Upa Tuanzagou), Daizang, Manipur, v) Shri Philip Thanglienmang & his family, vi) Mr. Paugoulun, M. Tanglian, Manipur, vii) Upa Thonghang (Founding member of JCA), Nagaland, and viii) Shri Khaikhansuan, BSF Camp, Chhawla, Delhi.

After mass prayer, Pastorpi Niangzadim crooned one of the church hymns. Then PCI (Reformed) Pastor T. Liankholal shared some of the testimonies of Pu Roching Pudaite, founder of Bible for the World (1971). He encouraged the Sunday devotees and blessed the ‘faith promise’ form. Then these were distributed among the people.

The sermon began. Pastor Lalpu, after 45 days leave, it was his first sermon. He cited St. Luke 2:15. After the message, the gatherers were delighted to hear the song sung by Mr. Boboi and Mr. Thangnou. These two youths praised God with their sweet voice. While they sang the song, a young lady, Grace Valte gathered the Sunday offerings and collections. And Pastor Lalpu made the offertory prayer.

The Local Secretary highlighted the biography of Philip Thanglienmang. MELCD chairman T. Zamlunmang also shared his opinions about the book to be released. During his sharing, the special guest arrived. Then the main item ‘Book Release’ began. The author introduced his guide, Prof. P.K.S Pandey, who subsequently released the book. Prof. Pandey also gave a nice speech. After that the author introduced all the invitees who were present. He began sharing his ideas and opinions. Pastor Lalpu blessed the author and his book. The Local Secretary wind-up the evening by compiling vote of thanks. The worship service ended with benediction of Upa T. Ginsuanthang. Thereafter celebrating the new book with ‘special refreshment’ provided by Philip and his family. LYF Delhi was entrusted to sell the books.

About the Author

Mr. Philip Thanglienmang is the fourth son of (L) Subedar Peter Thangkhokam Tungdim and (L) Mari Lienzanieng. He has 5 brothers and 1 sister. One of his brothers is no more. He was born on 22 February, 1964 in Singtom village, Chandel District, Manipur (India).

Early Education

From 1970 to 1975 he did his primary schooling in his home town Sugnu at St. Joseph’s School, Sugnu, Manipur.

Matriculation and College Education

He completed matriculation from Loyola High School, Jakhama, Nagaland securing the 10th Rank in Nagaland Board in the year 1980, obtained distinction marks in Hygiene, science and Geography subjects.

He bagged the Nagaland State Government Scholarship and he went to St. Edmund’s College, Shillong to complete Pre-University Science in the year 1982 with distinction.

In the year 1986 he passed out from Lukhdhirji Engineering College, Morvi, Gujarat securing First Class B.E. (Civil Engineering) degree.

He completed M.A. (Linguistics) in the year 2007 from Annamalai University, Tamil Nadu.

From 1987 onwards he served as S.O-Grade I in Manipur Public Works Department under the Government of Manipur.

Married to a beautiful lady, Nuomzavung on March 7, 1993. His family is blessed with two daughters and two sons. They live in Delhi Government Officers Flats at Greater Kailash-I, New Delhi.

In the month of June, 1993, he was promoted to the rank of Assistant Engineer as Gazetted Officer. He served as Assistant Engineer (Dev.) in the office of Deputy Commissioner, Churachandpur till 1996. He qualified in the UPSC Civil Service (Main) Examination by opting Anthropology and Geography subjects. In 1996, he joined DANICS (Delhi, Daman & Diu, Dadra Nagar, Andaman, Nicobar Islands Civil Service); an IAS-allied service under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. He is posted with the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi. He is currently pursuing Ph.D in JNU, New Delhi.

His Designation

He is the Joint Registrar in Cooperative Society (Govt. of NCT of Delhi), New Delhi.

He founded Zou Cultural cum Literature Society India (ZOCULSIN) in 1998.

He is the president of United Zou Organisation (UZO), Delhi.

The Zou Sangnaupang Pawlpi, Delhi Branch (Zou Students’ Association) is celebrating its XVIIIth Annual Freshers’ Social Meet 2010 on October 28, 2010 at Sir Shankar Lal Concert Hall, DU north Campus starting from 10.30AM sharp. The General President of United Zou Organisation GHQ Pu Ginsuanhau has consented to grace the function as the Chief Guest, Pu T. Doulianmang, An Entrepreneur as the Guest of Honour and Dr. David Vumlallian Zou as the Functional President. UZO GHQ Cabinet members are invited as a Special guest.

The Zou super singer, popularly known as Mauna Ngen ~ Pu Thangzalal @ TTLAL will be flowned in from Lamka as a special invitee. Beside TT Lal, another solo singers like Nh. Chochong, Nh. Betsy & George K Mate, Nh. Maannu, Nh. Mangnu, Tv. Joseph Doulunlal, Tv. Thangminlun @ Thazzz Tv Malsom will entertain the gethering. We all know that our nationality would remain and exist only as long as we preserve our cultures and customs. But nowadays we can simply say that some of our sons and daughters ignored our own cultures and customs., and are ashamed of it because of being Zo tribes. Some cannot speak our mother tongue(Zo/Zou language). They even avoid and shun from observing and abiding their own cultures and customs. Some even substituted other national names instead of their traditional names. Some modernize their personal name which their parents named them at their birth. Some even look down and curse their own tribe of Zo people. These are the great mistakes and faults of their parents or guardians, who carelessly allowed them to ignore and terminate their precious culture and customs from the very beginning of their childhood.(Page 330).
Donot let your whole family speak other dialect except our mother tongue(read: Zo) especially in your residence and its compound. Never forget to give first priority to your nationality, culture, custom, mother tongue and God. Keep your nationality by preserving your valuable cultures and customs which are as precious a silver and gold, that your almighty God purposely and especially provide for you from the beginning of the creation of the world.(Ibid.Page 332)
Actually, words that are used in Zo songs are common language which are widely used by Zomi of Tedim and Ton Zaang townships. In fact, some Zo traditional songs have been used in Christian songs. To be in line with the present situation as well as for the preservation of Zo traditinal songs and cultures, the Zo Christians should consider the used of Zo traditional songs in praising God. Since, Zo traditional songs are as precious as silver and gold, it is our task to maintain and preserve such a valuable merit handed down from generations to generations. (Ibid.Page 333)
The original tongue of the Zote might be Hâidawi dialect. As the Israelites retained the Hebrew language so also if we are going to retain our real mother tongue, we must speak Hâidawi dialect, for it was the first and lingua Franca of the Zote descendants. Similarly, if anyone among the Zote descendants would like to print any book or Bible, he would use the Hâidawi dialect words, not because of its fitness but only for it originality. I believe we all agree to give first priority to Haidawi dialect as our Zote- original mother tongue.(Ibid.Page 442).

Dear all,

Partially, i must admit that i agree with Mary Grace, [one of the few PhD holders in our society] in what she said about differentiating between the Zous of Manipur and the Zos of Burma. In fact, it is a good idea, or is it? (because a PhD is suggesting)I think the Zos in Burma would not be too sad to be differentiated from the Zous of Manipur. What i feared the most, if both the Zos in Burma and India are united, is that the Zos of Burma might be infected with the kind of virus that is spreading among the Zous of Manipur. Some of the viruses that i feared the most is politicising, extreme in religious denomination, clan-ism, non-acceptance of different way of thinking and mediocrity.At least so far, the Zos in Burma do not have problems with clans, denominations, politicizing, though unity differs in different levels. Yes, it is true, the Zos in Burma are refugees much like many of the Burmese people. But that's not the weakness of the Zos, and though the Zos in India may not be refugees, do not mislead yourself that you are a part of the free India. The Zos, where ever we are, are still a minority, and are behind many other tribes in every aspects, and honestly, there is nothing to boost about being a Zo from any country, because the fact is that neither the Zos of Burma nor the Zous of India has anything to be so proud of. How many IAS, IPS, IFS do we have among the Zous in India? And how many Engineers, doctors or lawyers do we have? One successful lawyer, doctor or engineer cannot uplift the whole community. Similarly, how many technocrats, scholars, professionals do we have among the Zos in Burma? There is nothing to be too proud, but that must be the source of our determination to strive for more and to achieve more. Population wise:The combine population of the Zos both in india and Burma are still lesser than our nearest brethren Mizos or Kukis. There is nothing to be too proud of being recognise as ZOU by the Indian government, in fact it is a shame because that policy is india’s divide and rule policy. The Nagas have never allowed themselves to be divided among themselves despite of living in two separate states in Nagaland and Manipur and even in Burma. They know too well about Indian government’s policies.
Are we just too content with what we are now? Then we would be like – the frog within the elephant’s foot-step (Sai Khekhap sung aa ki dieng dieng ukeng I bang ding uh hi).
Possible advantages:
There is no point of arguing among ourselves over the spelling of Zo/Zou. Because this is not our original script, and the spellings have not been composed by us. The most important thing is to realise ourselves as brothers and turn our seemingly unfortunate fate of being divided in two countries to our advantage.
In this modern world, some of the most developed societies are peoples who have access to trade, commerce, and opportunity to interact with diverse group of people. Most of all, peoples who have the opportunity to have across border access are in greater advantage. If we look at our geographical locations, most of the Zos are residing along the Indo-Burmese border, which has a large potential of being used as an international border trade point (in fact, Moreh has been declared an International border trade point long time ago). In the future, these border points will be further develop, as India and Burma negotiate for more bilateral relationship. Currently, most of Indo-Burmese trade takes place through these border trade points.
If we are smart, we should be able to capitalise this advantage and even explore more and more, so that it will increase our knowledge as well as learn from other cultures. So far, the only group of people taking this advantage are the business community from mainland India, they do have a fairer knowledge about Burma and its ethnic people than anyone in Manipur.
Conclusion:
But at the end of the day, it is really up to the Zos as a whole whether to unite or to divide and it would be solely us suffering the consequences, as we have began to face the consequences of the division among the Zos in Delhi. But that would not directly impact our personal lives, because every morning we do not wake up as a representative of the tribe but as an individual.
But unity and acceptance as brethrens among ourselves will give us more courage, strength, will, and pride of being a part of a society that we believe we belong to.

TAMCHON TROPHY MATCH REPORT BETWEEN ZODFC AND SSPPFC

May be the day knew what was in store for the SSPP fans. the sun hid behind the hazy cover of fog and smoke that hung over the city.
It was cold and i shivered as i stood there by the bylines in the breeze that made me want to join the guys on the pitch in order to keep warm. it wouldn't get any sunnier for the body as well as the mind. 3-2, the final scoreline in favor of ZOD as SSPP slumped to their second close defeat in 3 games and with it went the chance of making it to the next round. a defeat and a draw had not dampened the spirit of support [that again turned out in large numbers] and with the slightest of chances remaining, however, in the end it was to be a case of chances not taken. another game of goals, another defeat. and now just one game and a matter of pride left for all the fanfare with which this journey began.

The match venue was shifted to the Jesus and Mary College ground as the Delhi Government decided that the Nov. 14th Children's Day celebration could be held only at the Ambedkar Stadium instead of the many other grounds [bigger, better and probably available for use] across the city. so, the 22 men on the pitch now cramped into a field about two-thirds of the normal football pitch and the result, an end to end football match with no discernable midfield action because once the half line was crossed they were in shooting distance of the goals.

Needing a positive result, SSPP were up running from the whistle. it was a much more assured display from the men in white as compared to the previous matches, though it wasn't without some heart-stopping moments in defence. the first choice centre-back was then carried off after he aggravated a knee injury he was carrying from before. the defence has been the weak link in this team with mistakes often undoing the good forward play and this has kept this team winless. this time, however, a nervy ZOD keeper meant, he was the busier keeper in the first half as SSPP shot at goal from every opening. the keeper pulling off some wonderful saves to keep the scores level. however, it was his mistake that gave SSPP the lead. a cross to the far post from the left was flapped at by the keeper, the ball only popped up in front of the goal to be chested into an open goal by the SSPP no. 7. there were other close calls and one gilt-edge chance when the left winger blasted high over a gaping goal. so, "another half-time lead" said one of the supporters i overheard, "just like the first match." yes, indeed.

The defensive display this time around was much more cohesive and ZOD didn't look like breaking through while at the other end, the ZOD keeper was busy tipping long range shots over the bar and making athletic saves. then, came the turning point of the match. a ball played over the SSPP defence set a ZOD striker free and bearing down on goal, the last SSPP defender chasing him could only clip his legs as he tried to get back and the referee was forced to produce red. there was no other option for the referee. a man down and more misery as the resulting free-kick was wonderfully converted to level the scores.

The SSPP players were left dazed. with only three defenders, the disruption caused by the sending off was pounced on by ZOD as they took the lead a couple of minutes later. the defence still coming to terms with their loss, confusion reigned as a cross came in from the right, it wasn't dealt with and though, the initial shot from the ZOD left winger who got on the end of the cross was saved the ball fell to an unmarked ZOD player in the six yard box who swiped it into the open goal. 2-1, the Himalayas to climb to get back into the match and in contention for a next round spot.

SSPP did get back into the match. with 10 men against 11, ZOD seemed to be the team missing a player as SSPP tried to carve out an equaliser and a winner. the ZOD keeper kept them at bay. the equaliser did finally come when a clever flick looped over the ZOD keeper into the net. however, in the end it was not be. the SSPP no.10, scorer in every match so far kept up his run however, this time with an own goal as he only managed to nick a weak corner kick past his keeper while attempting to clear it. it was not to be their day at all. a chance for another equaliser at the death was missed when a header from a few feet in front of the goal was sent over.

It was another thriller of a match for the neutrals. heartbreak for SSPP while ZOD celebrated their progress to the next round beneath the gloomy Delhi sky. winter has finally arrived.

New Delhi, October 21 2009: Some 196 Indian languages are endangered, according to a recent Unesco study, and a worried lot of linguists, scholars and policy-makers are meeting in a two-day international seminar here Thursday to discuss how to save these language.'According to the 'Unesco Atlas of the World's languages in Danger, 2009', India has around 196 endangered languages, among the highest in the world,' said Kamalini Sengupta from Intach Intangible Heritage Division, which is organising the seminar.'Intach has decided to place endangered languages in our priority area.But to gain a proper perspective and move in a positive direction, the situation needs careful study,' Sengupta added.For this purpose, an international seminar on endangered languages in India will be organised at the India International Centre.Scholars like Kapila Vatsyayan as well as linguists and educators will all discuss issues threatening these languages, a large chunk of which are regional and tribal languages ignored by the growing English and Hindi speaking masses.While announcing the event, several scholars highlighted some pertinent problems.'Most languages which are endangered are out of the loop of the education system.And the shrinking of languages used in Indian education system is not only because of infrastructure and resource constraints but because of what the market demands,' said Udaya Narayana Singh, former director of the Central Institute for Indian Languages (CIIL).G.D.Prasad Sastry, a research officer for the ministry of human resource development's CIIL and Centre for Tribal Languages, said the government lacked the will to tackle the problem which could lead to loss of culture and heritage associated with the language.'The 2002 census enlists India as having just 122 languages.Whereas in 1962 there were over 1,600 languages as per the survey.Isn't there something wrong then that Unesco's Atlas points at 196 endangered languages?' Sastry told IANS.The seminar will also see many international linguists and experts discussing the models followed in their countries.One such scholar, Nicolas Reid from the University of New England pointed out that the Australian subcontinent for decades ignored native languages and recent attempts to revive the language at the primary school level had even succeeded in improving level of participation and attendance.

ZO ORGANISATION DELHI
Zo Organization Delhi (ZOD) is a welfare body of the Zo / Zou community living in Delhi and its surrounding areas. It was established in Sept. 2004 at New Delhi with the main purpose of looking after the welfare of the community. The organization is a non-profit, non-religious and non-political body. The organization is headed by a Chairman, the highest post within the organizational set up, with one post each for General Secretary, Joint secretary, Finance Secretary and other members. Every Zo/Zou community shall be the members of the organization, provided they registered themselves as a member within 6 months from their arrival in Delhi.
The terms of the Executive Body shall be two years from the date of the general election. The post of Chairman is strictly reserved for the head of families. The organization collects funds through annual membership, emergency funds, donations and as the case may be which the Executive Body deems fit.
MEMORANDUM OF ASSOCIATION
INTRODUCTION
There are a good number of Zo/Zous scattered all over Delhi and NCR of Delhi in search of economic livelihood and higher academic pursuits since 1990s, which keep on increasing day by day. Students and government as well as private employees alike are firmly settled in the National Capital of India. We, as a community, had been facing various problems and difficulties; peculiar to the community and to the city as such. In order to tackle the manifold unforeseen problems that the community may face in future as a community as well as an individual there is an urgent need to have a common fund pool and systematic administrative body.
We, the Zo/Zou people, therefore, solemnly resolve to organize ourselves as Zo/Zou Organization Delhi. Zo/Zou Organization Delhi is a non-profit organization established mainly for the welfare of the Zo/Zou Community. In keeping with this spirit we lay down the following aims and objects of the organization.
MAIN AIMS and OBJECTS
1. To endeavour to stand unitedly in times of joy and sorrows.2. All matters relating thereto or incidental thereto affecting the interest of the Zo/Zous, which the Executive Committee of Zo/Zou Organization Delhi deems fit and proper.
OTHER AIMS and OBJECTS
1. To preserve, protect, develop and disseminate the tribal culture, customs and traditions, and language/dialects.2. To felicitate and present awards to the successful achievers in the any field 3. To conduct seminars, workshops, conferences, utsavs, games & sports etc. 4. To publish bulletins, journal, magazine, books, and other literatures.5. To produce tribal films, documentations, research and survey of their cultures.6. To accept gifts, donations & grants,
RULES AND REGULATIONS
1. The name of the Organization shall be “ZO ORGANIZATION DELHI”.2. Head Office: The office of the Organization shall remain in the Union Territory of Delhi at present 48, Delhi Government Officers Flats, Greater Kailash Part-I, New Delhi-48. 3. Registered Office: A/F
4. MEMBERSHIP:
(I) Any person who professes himself or herself to be Zo/Zou and willing to abide by the Rules & regulations of the Organization i.e., Zo/Zou Organization Delhi.
(II) Any person who arrives in Delhi and identify himself/herself to be Zo/Zou shall register within 6 months from the date of his/her arrival.
5. MEMBERSHIP FEES:
(a) New members – Rs. 100/-(b) Old Members – Rs. 25 annually.
6. COMPOSITION of the ZOD EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE:
The composition of the ZOD EC shall be as under:
a). Chairman: one (reserved for family head.)
b). Vice-Chairman: one
c). General Secretary: one senior student (preferably)
d). Jt. Secretary: one
e). Finance-cum-Treasurer one
f). Executive Members
i). Two members(preferably families) to be nominated by ZOD EC .
ii). President, ZSP
iii). Gen. Secretary, ZSP.
7. GOVERNING BODY:
The Governing Body means ZOD Executive Committee.
a). Term: The term of the EC shall be 2(two) years.
b). Notice: Minimum 7 days notice shall be required for the EC or as per the emergent need of the time.
c). Quorum: The quorum of EC meeting shall be 2/3rd of the total strength of the EC members.
POWERS AND DUTIES OF OFFICE BEARERS:
A. CHAIRMAN
a). To summon, to preside the EC and GBM meetings.
b). In case of tie he has the power to cast the deciding vote.
c). No meeting shall be convened or summoned without his due approval.
d). Any meeting without his approval is invalid and illegal
e). To interpret the rules and regulations.
B. VICE-CHAIRMAN:
He shall enjoy the powers of the Chairman in his absence.
C. GENERAL SECRETARY:
a). To summon the Executive meetings and GBM meetings with prior approval of the Chairman.
b). To prepare membership register, to record minutes of the proceeding of the meetings
c). To ensure attendance are taken.
d). To sign all documents on behalf of the organization with approval of the Executive Committee.
D. Jt. SECRETARY:
He shall assist the General Secretary, and enjoy the powers of the GS in his/her absence.
E. FINANCE-cum-TREASURER:
(i). To explore every possible avenue/source for the generation of fund.
(ii). To maintain the funds of the organization.
(iii).To keep proper records of all receipts and expenditures.
9. GENERAL BODY:
All members of the organization shall constitute the General Body.
10. GENERAL BODY MEETING:
a). Notice: 15 days written notice shall be given to the members of the organization before the date of the GBM enclosing agenda specifying date, time, place and issues to be discussed.
b). Meeting: GBM shall be held once in every year compulsorily.
c). Quorum:
(a) The quorum of the GBM shall be 1/3rd(one third ) of the total strength of the organization.
(b) In case of lack of quorum, the Chairman may postpone the meeting for an hour, and thereafter may reconvened the meeting with the members present.
11. RIGHTS and PRIVILEGES:
All and every member of the organization:-
a) Shall be entitled to equal voting right(equal franchise).
b) Shall have the right to give their views in tune with the rules and regulations of the organization.
c) Any person shall have no right to oppose or criticize the resolutions passed in the meetings in an inappropriate manner without attending the meetings in spite of being duly informed by the organization.
12. CONDOLENCE:
In case of death of first degree relative of a member outside Delhi, the organization shall conduct condolence meeting to the aggrieved member/s.
13. VACANCIES:
In case of any casual vacancy the executive Committees shall appoint any member for the vacant post for the remaining terms.
14. ELECTION OF OFFICE BEARERS:
The Office Bearer of the Executive Committee shall be elected by the members at the annual GBM.
15. FINANCIAL YEAR:
The financial year is from 1st April to 31st March
16. AMENDMENTS:
(i) Addition or deletion of any clause or sub-clause in the Memorandum of Association shall be amended(added/deleted) only with a 1/3rd majority of the total valid strength of the organization.
(ii) The GBM proceedings conducted under 10(c) Sub-clause (b) shall not be entitled to amend the Bye-Laws of the Organization.
17. AUDIT:
The Accounts of the organization shall be audited annually by person/s to be appointed by the EC from time to time.

The Brief History of Zo People
The history of the ZO people is obscure, shrouded in myth and lends. In the absent of written documents, it is extremely difficult to have early history of the ZOs. However through historical, linguistics, archaeological findings and ethnic relationships, it is widely accepted that the ZO belongs to the Tibeto-Burman groups. The Zo people are an indigenous tribe, living mostly in the present-day Tonzaang and Tedim townships of Northern Chin State and the Kabaw valley of Western Sagaing division in the Union of Burma. With an estimated population of over 60,000 the Zo are scattered in various parts of Burma and the world. In India, they are officially recognized as the "Zou tribe".

Of the three major races of the Tibeto-Burman group of people – Tet, Pyu and Kanyan - the Zo Belong to the Tet group of people and are further sub-grouped under the umbrella name Chin. The Zos are the original descendants (progeny) of a legendary person named Pu Zo, who is believed to be the elder brother of Pu Zing Phaw (presently known as Kachins). Though living under the present-day military-ruled Burma, the Zote were known to have lived independently and harmoniously since time immemorial. Due to lack of evidence and difficulties in excavating archaeological remains, the Zo's origins are difficult to be proved. Though widely believed to have descended from Mongolia, the routes to the present settlements are not clear. It is believed that the Zote have descended from Mongolia to China and to Tibet and to the present day Burma.

Many of scholars believed that the origin of the ZO people was somewhere in the North-Western China, more specifically, the area which lies between the upper course of the Yangtze Kiang and the Hwang HO rivers are believed to be the original home of the ZO people. S.K. Chatterji, also makes an attempt to identify the area of the North-West China between the head waters of Hwang Ho and Yangtze Kiang Rivers: as the origin of the Sino-Tibetan migration in to India and Burma. Dr. Grierson wrote “tradition and comparative physiology agree in pointing to North-Western China between the upper course of the Yangtze Kiang and the Hwang Ho as the original home the Tibeto-China race, to which the Tibeto-Burman and the Siamese-Chinese groups belong”. It was also an accepted fact that this people belong to Tibeto-Burman stock. This historical linguistic and ethnicity of the ZO people to the place of origin established this fact from thence; the ZO people had started their migration as their predecessors had done. They moved southwards, most probably via Tibetan Highlands then onto the Salween River and entered the Irrawaddy and Chindwin valley.

The entry of the ZO people into Burma was in different waves along with the other groups of people. The above arguments are indeed supported by folklores, oral tradition and legend. They came into this region by following the route south-westward on the line of the Irrawaddy and the Chindwin. They settled in the watershed area of Irrawaddy and Chindwin rivers for many generations and founded their kingdom “ Pupa Gam”. With the rising of the more powerful kingdom from south forced them to move to the east of river Chindwin. The Chindwin River is name by the ZO people as Tuikang (White Water). They crossed the river and settled in the area of Kale-Kabaw-Myittha-Yaw valley which stands still testimonial to our settlement even today.

The term ZO is derived from the generic name “ZO”, the progenitor of the ZO people. In the past, they were little known by their racial nomenclature. They were known by their plain neighbors of Burma, Bangladesh and India as Chin, Kuki, or Lushei/Mizo, Subsequently; the British employed these terms to christen those “wild hill tribes” living in the un-administered area and were subsequently legalized to be the names for the newly adopted subjects of Queen Victoria of England. However they called themselves ZO since time immemorial. It is also irony that some people less familiar or ignorant of their history interpret the name ZO to mean the climatic conditions of the highlands, “they occupy because they called the land with a cold climate of higher elevation “Zo”. This is totally a full misconception of the term and origin of ZO.

It is in fact also contrary to the origin and progenitor Pu ZO. This must have been one of the most catastrophic historical interpretations, because the people called themselves ZO when they live in the plains of Burma and the valley of Manipur (India). Thus, the name ZO could not have come from the climatic conditions of this land. They are ZO not because they live in the highlands or the hills, but all ZO and called themselves ZO because they are the descendants of the great ancestor, “ZO”.

The ZO inhabits the southern part of Indo-Burma, approximately ranging between 92 and 95 degree longitude east and 20 and 25 degree latitude north. The ZO folksongs give the picture oh their settlement, prosperity and the civilization that evolved in the plains of Burma in the last part of the Thirteen century A.D. It is also further believed that the ZO had once upon a time established an independent state in the upper Chindwin areas. This observation about establishment of kingdom is clearly evident by the terms “Kumpi”, “Mangpa”, and “Lengpa” which are equivalent to kingships. These above terms are indeed interwoven with the ZO people till today.

The ZO people are presently concentrated in the Northern part of Chin hills “Tonzang Myo”, in the kale-Tamu Kabaaw valley (Sagaing Division), and the southern districts of Manipur (Churachanpur and Chandel districts). This people are ethnically, culturally, socially and linguistically one people. They have their own distinct customs and cultures. The customs and cultures of this people can be very well identify if compare with the rest of other people. In fact they can be differentiated from their neighbor through their customs and cultures. They have rich cultures which ought to be preserved for all time to come.

The present distributions of the population of the ZO people and their most notable towns and villages can be seen from the Chindwin river in the east to Aizawl (Mizoram, India) in the west and from Kalemyo, (Burma) in the south to Imphal (Manipur, India) in the north. The hubs of their present settlements are all along most important routes of the region. They all spread all along the Indo-Burma road, the Tedim road and the Tamu-kalemyo National Highways.

Some of the most important inhabited towns and villages of the ZO people all along the above mentioned routes/roads are thus: Along the Tamu-Kalemyo National Highways are Tamu, Zanglienphai, Lallian, Kanan, Khampat No.(1) and (3), Nangkateih, Nangkhaukhau or BuangKung, Kyuantaw Yeshin or Tuikhal, Phetya Yeshin or Kuonglien, KannOo, Taazi, Kalemyo etc..;

Towns and villages along the Indo-Burma road are Sugnu, Singtom, Gelngai, Salem, Paldai, Sahich Tampak, Kathoung, Khollian, Moulnuom, Zangzom, Zangdung, Khoungtal, Denlha, Senam, Thuambuol, Khianglam, Lungtah, Gelmuol, Khuamun, Anlun, Naazang, Tonzangmyo etc.. towns and villages all along the Tedim Road are S. Muolnuom, Lamka (Churachandpur), Zoumun, Khianglam, Geltui, Gelzang, Busau, Hiangtam Khounou, Hiangtam, Singngat, Behiang, Khuaivum, Tonzang, Phungtong, Salzang, Tahzang, Lomzang, Gamngai, Tualmu, Gelzang, Gienchiel, Tedim. Moreover, apart from these routes and roads many ZO villages are scattering all other parts of this particular region. It will not be out of the text to include some more. In the Tuining, Singheu kual some of the notable villages are, Tuining, Vazang, Sangaikot, Kuvan, Tuaitenphai, Tuibul, Saiboh, Gangpimual, ZO Bethel, Khaukual, Moulom, Khuainuoi, Siongheu, Phaisan, Phaisat in Churachandpur distirict; In Tonzang Area to Khampat, Phaitu, Khamzang, Seksi, Thauthe, Maulawn, Liikhaan, Tuigial, Tuimang, Singtum, Sialthawzang, Boungkung, etc… The above towns and villages are aligned from North to South direction. There are other many villages which are not included here.

The ZO people took pride in calling themselves by this name for ages. The cultural heritage of the ZO people makes them whole as having a full blossom identity as ZO. This people traditionally named their sons and daughters, villages, places imbibing the great great progenitor “ZO”. Names such as Zogam, Zozaam, Zotui etc. stand testimonial to the affiliation that these people has had to their great ancestor Pu ZO from time immemorial.

Religion

Traditionally animism was considered to be the most widely practiced religion among Zo people, until the Swedish-American Baptist missionaries preached Christianity around 1899, for the first time. Today, we can witness so many different Christian denominations across Chin State and among the Zo people. Approximately there are about 5 to 10 percent of people who profess to be non-Christians currently in Chin State, the rest, however are Christians either by birth or conviction.

Records of Zo

Introduction / History The Zo / Zou/Jou are a Tibeto-Mongoloid group of people, a sub-family of the Chin-Kuki-Mizo race. They form a group of Tibeto-Burman peoples inhabiting the Chin Hills in Mynamar and Manipur in India. They are also recorded as Yo and Jou by many colonial civil servants and modern writers. The earliest historical records of the Zo were written by Fan-Cho a diplomat of the Tang dynasty of China, who mentioned a kingdom in Chindween valley whose princes and chiefs were called Zo, Shou, or Zhou in the year 862 A.D. The most accurate historical records of the Zos/Zous were written by Rev. Fr. Vincentious Sangermano, a Roman Catholic missionary who came to Burma in 1783 A.D. He wrote a book entitled "A Description of the Burmese Empire", which was published in 1835 A.D in Rome in the Latin language. Later on it was translated into English by William Tandy D.D. "To the east of the Chien Mountains is a pretty nation called 'Jou'. They are supposed to have been Chein, who in the progress of time have become Burmanized, speaking their language, although very corruptly, and adopting all their customs." Betram S. Carey CIE, Assistant Commissioner, Burma, and Political Officer, Chin Hills and H. N. Tuck, Extra Assistant Commissioner, Burma and Assistant Political Officer, Chin Hills wrote 'The Chin Hills'. In that book, Volume I, page 140, they wrote about the Zos as follows: "The Yos (Zos) tribe three generations back occupied the tract now occupied by the Kanhow clan of Soktes, and many of the Kanhow villages are inhabited still by Yos, whose tribal name has given way to that of Kanhow. As has been shown in the previous chapter, Kantum, the Sokte, conquered all the inhabitants right up to the borders of Manipur, and Kanhow, his son, founded Tiddim village and ruled the newly acquired conquests of his father. The conquered Yos thus became known as Kanhowte, Kanhow's men, and as they intermarried with the Soktes who settled north with Kanhow, there is no real difference between the conquerors and the conquered". "While all clans and families belonging to the tribe who call their chief Topa designated themselves by 'Yo' or 'Zo', they in turn apply their common name to a particular clan. The Yos (Zos) are most unique in the sense of the name they bear and the culture they practice in reflection of the ancient Zo tradition" ... No proper study has yet been made as to why the generic Yo as spelt in former literature was applied to them". The use of the term Zou can be traced back by comparative linguistic and cultural studies to some Chinese roots or other related Southeast Asian cultural complex. Preliminary enquiry suggests that there is a tribe bearing the name 'Yao' in the Lingnan region (Kwangtung - Kwangsi) of China, which is described as 'a center of dispersal for the Yao of Yunnan and northern Southeast Asia'. Lebar, et al. informed us that Kwangsi contained more Yao than any other Chinese province. Yao settlements are mainly concentrated in a series of mountain backwater areas and they are ethnic islands surrounded by Chinese culture. Their linguistic position is uncertain, but they are frequently classified as Sino-Tibetan by linguists. The description of the Yao of the Lingnam region and Yunnan province in China interestingly tallies with the cultural characteristics of the Zous in Manipur and Myanmar at many points. While colonial records referred to the Zou tribe variously as 'Yo' or 'Yaw', the Zou community living in Manipur called itself 'Jou'. The first Christian church established by the Zou tribe in Manipur was called Jou Christian Association (JCA), founded 20 February 1954. But the government of India officially recognized the name of this tribe as 'Zou' in 1956. The term 'Zo' has been employed in many books written by the Zou to denote the word 'Zou', for simple reason of phonetic usage. The first complete version of the Holy Bible in the Zo language (1983) used the title 'The Holy Bible in Zo' and the second complete Holy Bible used the word 'Zokam'. T. Gougin used the terminology Zo and Zomi to denote this community in the book 'A Brief History of Zou' (1961) and Pu. Thangkhanlal also used the term 'Zo' in his Zo primer (1973), and others. The Zou themselves employ the various terms Zo, Zou, and Zomi to mean their tribe. The Zos in India really do not bother whether they use Zo, Zou, or Zomi to denote themselves. But in Myanmar (Burma) these very same people have been using the term 'Zo' to denote themselves in Chin Hills and in the Sagaing division of Myanmar since the beginning of Roman script for writing, perhaps as early as the 1920s. The name 'Zo' has been used by them since time immemorial.

ZO ORGANISATION DELHI aims,memorandum and byelaws

Zo Organization Delhi (ZOD) is a welfare body of the Zo / Zou community living in Delhi and its surrounding areas. It was established in Sept. 2004 at New Delhi with the main purpose of looking after the welfare of the community. The organization is a non-profit, non-religious and non-political body. The organization is headed by a Chairman, the highest post within the organizational set up, with one post each for General Secretary, Joint secretary, Finance Secretary and other members. Every Zo/Zou community shall be the members of the organization, provided they registered themselves as a member within 6 months from their arrival in Delhi.
The terms of the Executive Body shall be two years from the date of the general election. The post of Chairman is strictly reserved for the head of families. The organization collects funds through annual membership, emergency funds, donations and as the case may be which the Executive Body deems fit.
MEMORANDUM OF ASSOCIATION
INTRODUCTION
There are a good number of Zo/Zous scattered all over Delhi and NCR of Delhi in search of economic livelihood and higher academic pursuits since 1990s, which keep on increasing day by day. Students and government as well as private employees alike are firmly settled in the National Capital of India. We, as a community, had been facing various problems and difficulties; peculiar to the community and to the city as such. In order to tackle the manifold unforeseen problems that the community may face in future as a community as well as an individual there is an urgent need to have a common fund pool and systematic administrative body.
We, the Zo/Zou people, therefore, solemnly resolve to organize ourselves as Zo/Zou Organization Delhi. Zo/Zou Organization Delhi is a non-profit organization established mainly for the welfare of the Zo/Zou Community. In keeping with this spirit we lay down the following aims and objects of the organization.
MAIN AIMS and OBJECTS
1. To endeavour to stand unitedly in times of joy and sorrows.2. All matters relating thereto or incidental thereto affecting the interest of the Zo/Zous, which the Executive Committee of Zo/Zou Organization Delhi deems fit and proper.
OTHER AIMS and OBJECTS
1. To preserve, protect, develop and disseminate the tribal culture, customs and traditions, and language/dialects.2. To felicitate and present awards to the successful achievers in the any field3. To conduct seminars, workshops, conferences, utsavs, games & sports etc.4. To publish bulletins, journal, magazine, books, and other literatures.5. To produce tribal films, documentations, research and survey of their cultures.6. To accept gifts, donations & grants,
RULES AND REGULATIONS
1. The name of the Organization shall be “ZO/ZOU ORGANIZATION DELHI”.2. Head Office: The office of the Organization shall remain in the Union Territory of Delhi at present 48, Delhi Government Officers Flats, Greater Kailash Part-I, New Delhi-48.3. Registered Office: A/F
4. MEMBERSHIP:
(I) Any person who professes himself or herself to be Zo/Zou and willing to abide by the Rules & regulations of the Organization i.e., Zo/Zou Organization Delhi.
(II) Any person who arrives in Delhi and identify himself/herself to be Zo/Zou shall register within 6 months from the date of his/her arrival.
5. MEMBERSHIP FEES:
(a) New members – Rs. 100/-(b) Old Members – Rs. 25 annually.
6. COMPOSITION of the ZOD EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE:
The composition of the ZOD EC shall be as under:
a). Chairman: one (reserved for family head.)
b). Vice-Chairman: one
c). General Secretary: one senior student (preferably)
d). Jt. Secretary: one
e). Finance-cum-Treasurer one
f). Executive Members
i). Two members(preferably families) to be nominated by ZOD EC .
ii). President, ZSP
iii). Gen. Secretary, ZSP.
7. GOVERNING BODY:
The Governing Body means ZOD Executive Committee.
a). Term: The term of the EC shall be 2(two) years.
b). Notice: Minimum 7 days notice shall be required for the EC or as per the emergent need of the time.
c). Quorum: The quorum of EC meeting shall be 2/3rd of the total strength of the EC members.
POWERS AND DUTIES OF OFFICE BEARERS:
A. CHAIRMAN
a). To summon, to preside the EC and GBM meetings.
b). In case of tie he has the power to cast the deciding vote.
c). No meeting shall be convened or summoned without his due approval.
d). Any meeting without his approval is invalid and illegal
e). To interpret the rules and regulations.
B. VICE-CHAIRMAN:
He shall enjoy the powers of the Chairman in his absence.
C. GENERAL SECRETARY:
a). To summon the Executive meetings and GBM meetings with prior approval of the Chairman.
b). To prepare membership register, to record minutes of the proceeding of the meetings
c). To ensure attendance are taken.
d). To sign all documents on behalf of the organization with approval of the Executive Committee.
D. Jt. SECRETARY:
He shall assist the General Secretary, and enjoy the powers of the GS in his/her absence.
E. FINANCE-cum-TREASURER:
(i). To explore every possible avenue/source for the generation of fund.
(ii). To maintain the funds of the organization.
(iii).To keep proper records of all receipts and expenditures.
9. GENERAL BODY:
All members of the organization shall constitute the General Body.
10. GENERAL BODY MEETING:
a). Notice: 15 days written notice shall be given to the members of the organization before the date of the GBM enclosing agenda specifying date, time, place and issues to be discussed.
b). Meeting: GBM shall be held once in every year compulsorily.
c). Quorum:
(a) The quorum of the GBM shall be 1/3rd(one third ) of the total strength of the organization.
(b) In case of lack of quorum, the Chairman may postpone the meeting for an hour, and thereafter may reconvened the meeting with the members present.
11. RIGHTS and PRIVILEGES:
All and every member of the organization:-
a) Shall be entitled to equal voting right(equal franchise).
b) Shall have the right to give their views in tune with the rules and regulations of the organization.
c) Any person shall have no right to oppose or criticize the resolutions passed in the meetings in an inappropriate manner without attending the meetings in spite of being duly informed by the organization.
12. CONDOLENCE:
In case of death of first degree relative of a member outside Delhi, the organization shall conduct condolence meeting to the aggrieved member/s.
13. VACANCIES:
In case of any casual vacancy the executive Committees shall appoint any member for the vacant post for the remaining terms.
14. ELECTION OF OFFICE BEARERS:
The Office Bearer of the Executive Committee shall be elected by the members at the annual GBM.
15. FINANCIAL YEAR:
The financial year is from 1st April to 31st March
16. AMENDMENTS:
(i) Addition or deletion of any clause or sub-clause in the Memorandum of Association shall be amended(added/deleted) only with a 1/3rd majority of the total valid strength of the organization.
(ii) The GBM proceedings conducted under 10(c) Sub-clause (b) shall not be entitled to amend the Bye-Laws of the Organization.
17. AUDIT:
The Accounts of the organization shall be audited annually by person/s to be appointed by the EC from time to time.
